Resigning on a High Note
by Jacquie Wise
It’s always best to leave a job on a high note. Even if you’re leaving on bad terms. One way to do this is to include a comment of thanks in your letter of resignation.
You might say: ‘But they were awful—that’s why I’m leaving—I have nothing to thank them for!’
Well, you learnt something, even if it wasn’t because of your manager’s efforts in training you. (Perhaps you learnt from your manager how NOT to lead!)
Here are some ideas of what to say in your letter of resignation:
- It was a great experience working with such a terrific team
- I learnt a lot from you (specify)
- I am taking many pleasant memories with me
- I’d like to keep in touch
- You were very generous with your training
- I valued being part of such a dynamic company
- It was a privilege to have contributed to…
- I’d like to thank you for…
- Working at…was a rewarding experience on many levels…
The point is to leave behind the best possible impression, even if it’s only that you have good manners.
