R U OK? Day

There has been a lot of media over the last few weeks leading up today's R U OK? Day.  I'm so impressed, not only by this initiative but also by the wonderful resources on the R U OK? Day website.

In the Resources for You section there are two terrific buttons asking:

There are stories of inspiration and role plays to help you start that conversation with someone you know that can change their life.

In my experience, a great deal of pain and tragedy could be prevented if just one person cared enough to notice something’s wrong and to have the courage to diplomatically talk about it.

It all begins with getting to know more of your neighbours and work colleagues you would not normally talk to in your job role. A smile spreads warmth and can break down so many barriers and help difficult conversations begin.

I have found that many people avoid asking questions they perceive to be too personal and intrusive and they worry that they may ‘open the floodgates.’ If that happens, the best thing that you can do is listen and then gently encourage them to seek professional support.

There are many free and low-cost options available in Australia.  Be the one who cares enough to make a difference and ask ‘are you okay.’  For all you know, you may be the ONLY one in this person’s life to bother.
