What’s it like for someone to love you and be loved by you?

Valentine’s Day… I’d forgotten all about it until someone reminded me.  (Says a lot about what’s going on in my life, doesn’t it!)

Well—you can’t attract what you don’t have within you, so for some time, I’ve been focusing on all aspects of love. Ensuring those around me feel loved by me, making sure I express appreciation for myself by taking care of myself properly. Loving my home, my little garden sanctuary and the herbs I grow in it for my beloved cooking. Loving whatever I’m doing in the moment.

It also raises questions about what it is like to be loved by me and what it is like to love me.

Hmn.  Do people I love feel suffocated, or do they crave more attention from me?  Do people who try to love me feel loved back, or at least appreciated?

Loving or being loved are not the same.

What’s it like to work with me, to share a house with me? Go out with me or take a journey with me?  What’s it been like to parent me, to be my partner or my sibling?

And to extend these reflections beyond my immediate circle. What’s it like to serve me in a restaurant or to be my neighbour?

All these are valuable questions to raise your self-awareness and ensure that there’s not something in your behaviour that drives people away.

Can you say with truth that you are fully aware of the impact you have on those who spend time with you one way or another? In what ways do they ‘put up’ with you?

Is this who you want to be, and be seen to be? Or do you need to make new choices about the way you show up in your various relationships?

I’ve found that self-reflection like this has huge payoffs.  It’s helped me improve my relationship with my sister, with certain friends, with people who work with me.  I’ve drawn so many more close friendships, and more harmony in general into my life.

And you know what? I like myself better in consequence of the changes I’ve made over time. It has led me to greater self-love.  Good stuff.
