How to gain insights from your past

Gain insights into your life.

Growth comes from reflecting on your experiences and gaining some wisdom to help you on your journey. That same reflection will also give you greater confidence for future decisions as you understand yourself better.

Track the major pivotal points in your life.

Choose one that you would like to work with.  Put yourself back into the atmosphere of the time. If you were younger at the time, take care not to react with your more mature mind, but as you felt and thought at that time.

What signs along the way were you aware of or failed to spot that showed you the direction that was emerging?

Bring yourself to the turning point, when you made a decision or choice.  Perhaps it was a choice to do nothing.  Observe the stepping-stones that have led you since then to where you are now.

You could choose to track the process of a particular relationship and the stepping-stones that have built (or broken down) the relationship to where it is now.

In order to gain insights you need to think about your past.

The aim is to identify how the choices you made contributed positively or negatively to a situation.

There is no place for blame on a spiritual journey.

It’s all too easy to say ‘he started it’ or ‘if she hadn’t done that…’

We can choose to respond differently no matter how someone else behaves.

It’s equally easy to fall into a vortex of self-recrimination and ‘I should have known better.’  Well—you may know better now, but you didn’t back then.  You can only do what you can do.

If you know better now and have developed the strength to respond rather than react, that’s growth.  That’s wisdom.

Trace how you might have become a different person if you’d followed each of these different choices.

Might the situation have improved?  Are you glad that you didn’t do something that would have made the situation worse?

You may be surprised to realise that you have a variety of inner strengths and emerging talents that you can now develop or draw on next time. Bravo!
