Increasing your career choices in a changing employment marketplace

The employment marketplace can be tricky to navigate at the best of times.

In a rapidly changing world, the ability to adapt to change is the key to survival, success and fulfillment.

If you don’t know exactly what career will fulfil you, it will help to have the flexibility to slot into a variety of different industries and occupations so that you can get a taste of what goes on at the same time that you are gathering varied experience. The employment marketplace isn’t the same for each industry.

Unless you want to be a specialist like a heart surgeon: the best way to prepare for an uncertain future is by being a generalist with specialties.

If you’ve been in the same role for a long time, it might be time to make a transition to something different, which might have a better pathway to a more interesting level. But how do you get into the employment marketplace for a new industry?

It can be very threatening to take a part-time job when you need a full-time position.  It takes a lot of juggling with your budget and good time management to put in several applications at once.  You can negotiate which days you are available so your jobs don’t conflict.

An unknown employment marketplace can be intimidating.

The first step, as always, is to have an idea of where you want to end up

With any goal setting, we always start with where we’re going.  Have a look at positions of interest for which you are not yet ready.  Then work out what steps you could take to develop the skills and experience they’re asking for, so that you will be ready to apply for this level in a year or two.

Once you’ve identified what you need to develop by reviewing your current skills, make it a continual goal to get training, or to gain experience through volunteering in that skill.

What to do in a new employment marketplace.

Next:  Re-write your CV under job functions headings, like a key selection criteria statement.  Develop your own key skills headings, and begin by writing a statement of all the experience and skills you’ve gained under that heading.

Once you’ve got that draft, which will help you speak well at interview, you can condense it into bullet points for the final CV or resume.

This will help you shift your thinking to focus on the skills you can offer and the gaps in your credibility that you need to fill.
