Question about suicide and how it affects the karma of the soul

‘With regards to the subject of ‘souls’ (Last Friday). My neighbour recently committed suicide. My question is, if someone dies before their designated time, how would the karma of the soul be affected in the next life? Hoping to hear the answer. Thankyou’.

This question about suicide and how it affects the karma of the soul was received as an email enquiry from a listener of a Wise Ways Radio Program broadcast in 2012.

Answer

Before I answer the question, I’d like to clarify the difference between someone simply dying before their designated time and terminating a life before its designated time.

There is no such thing as a death before a designated time, even if it is by what we might call an ‘accident’.  If it’s time for the person to leave, the accident will occur to create the opportunity for them to leave.

From a spiritual perspective, suicide is different from any other kind of death, because it is the soul‘s choice to end things now. Of course, every individual is different, but in general, they would pick up their unfinished karma in the next life.

Suicide would then affect which life they choose next, to enable them to ‘finish the job’.  If there is a lesson to be learnt, like persistence and courage in the face of adversity, the next life will include similar adversities to provide the opportunity to learn those lessons and develop the soul further.

Because suicide also hurts those left behind, there may also be the need to share a life with those souls again in the future, to heal those hurts.  That’s as simple as I can make it in a short answer!

If anything else needs clarifying, please let me know.

You might find that, as a result of knowing the person who has committed suicide, even if it’s not a friend, family member or someone close to you, it raises questions for you or distresses you.

If so, it would be best to talk to a professional with an understanding of spiritual matters so they can discuss these issues with the relevant knowledge and answer your questions about suicide from a spiritual perspective as well as psychological.

If you are having your own distressing thoughts about suicide, it’s even more important not to struggle alone, but to seek support to find solutions you may not have thought of.

Sometimes emotions can be completely overwhelming and it’s not until a trained professional helps you separate the emotions from the facts, that you can find a wise way forward.
